Further Information

Man’s fascination with pigeons dates back to at least 5000 BC and there are numerous biblical references to pigeons and doves. For some societies pigeons have become a symbol of purity and peace; indeed, in some religions they are considered sacred. Over the centuries, through selective breeding, over 200 varieties of domesticated pigeons (Columbia Livia) have been developed resulting in breeds that differ from each other in size, shape, colour, markings and character.

Many pigeons mate for life and both cock and hen take turns in incubating eggs. Normally 2 eggs are laid about 2 days apart and both hatch about 17 days after the laying of the last egg. Both parents rear the young who become independent after about 30 days. A pigeon’s diet consists of mixed grain or pellets, supplemented by grit, minerals and water. All pigeons like water and thoroughly enjoy regular baths as well as the chance to sit in the rain. Obviously with all this water, food, droppings and many birds in close proximity, hygiene and prevention from disease is essential and there are plenty of publications, as well as experienced pigeon fanciers, available to guide the novice fancier through this aspect of caring for his or her birds.

Whether you choose to keep a few pigeons in a dovecot or several varieties in a spacious loft, you will find a variety of pigeon – big or small – that will appeal to you. If you are interested in conservation you may wish to breed a variety that is rare and possibly threatened with extinction – the choice is yours! Whatever you choose, you should very quickly become absorbed in a rewarding hobby that does not necessarily require a large outlay of cash. Plus you will have the opportunity to meet and compare notes with fellow fanciers and travel to various shows around the Country and overseas. Many fanciers join their National Breed and local Clubs which, aside from meetings and competitions, may also arrange visits and social activities. During the summer exhibitions at agricultural shows are very popular, whilst in the autumn and winter the Championship Shows are held in venues throughout the Country.

Pigeon keeping provides a hobby for an individual or family, young or old, which offers relaxation, education and friendship at home and abroad.
